Shopping day

February 4th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | Scotland | shopping - (0 Comments)

Instead of doing work like I should have today I ran errands instead.

First, we went to Xfeet to get fish pedicures. It was ok but needs to have a salon finish- like scrubbing and polish after.

Then we had a late lunch and wandered ending up at Primark for new pillows. After, we walked through the pouring rain and wind to Buchanan so I could see if my glasses were in and to pick up hair dye and toothpaste. 1 pair of my glasses in the twofor deal were ready.

Im so sleepy right now and I should be writing my last essay that is due next week. But I know I wont make sense so…….

I hope the rain stops soon. I was soaked through by the time we got home.

Update

January 26th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life | Scotland | UK - (0 Comments)

It’s been a busy week, starting off with a Burns night supper, lectures and meetings with classmates, and appointments.  I got my big assignment back related to my dissertation and did very well!  I am very pleased.  Now I must finish my proposal and move on to contacting schools and whatnot to get started!

I did finally get an update on my mum.

Ok.  So.  She has undefined carcinoma.  They were unable to find the primary site of the cancer- so the liver seems to be the secondary.  It is very early, but cannot give a stage b/c they can’t find the primary site.  They believe that it was “female cancer” to begin but that it stopped growing and moved on to the liver.  All the other tests are fine and clean and etc.

Chemo will begin 1x/week starting next week.  After they see how that goes it will be 2x/week every 3 weeks.

She seems ok with this, and no one said that there should be any worry at this stage.  Of course it would be nice if they could find the primary site, but….. they are continuing to lool but everything continues to be normal.

So……yeah.

Keep on keeping on…

Life is complicated.  My mom is in the hospital back home.    So I have been rather stressed about all of this, obviously.  Some of you are in the loop, and some are not and I am trying not to think about it at the moment, b/c I just get too overwhelmed.  I’m waiting to hear a definite definite and then I can commence freaking out again.

Not to mention the fact I have a ton of school work to deal with and that isn’t helping stress levels.  Part of me wants to jump on the first plane home, but until I have all the facts, it isn’t reasonable.  But the first sign of any issue I will.

So I am just keeping on keeping on.

Worrywort

January 6th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life | life in general | Scotland | UK - (1 Comments)

Clearly I should be worrying about something that is 9 months in the future. But it is what I do.

So….. after this adventure, what comes next? Do I stay here and try to find a job? Do I go home? I can stay and work 2 years on my student visa. I can see if I can get into the PhD program- if my grades are good enough….. but IDK. The economy sucks all around. Will there be jobs? Teaching jobs? Will I be able to get one? IDK if I could get one back home- given that my graduation is in September and school will already have started. I don’t want to go home to live at home and have no job or money.

Unrealistic dream: A certain celeb wakes up and realizes he should be marrying me! And does! And I live happily ever after. :)

Dream: move to London and work there teaching or consulting in regards to bullying issues (or working enough to live LOL)

Realistic: Stay here and hopefully find some sort of work or stay in school.

DO NOT WANT: to go home and have to live with my parents with no money or job. And even if I had a job I’d have no way to get to it with no car and no money to buy one.  (not that I don’t love my family, it is just a full house there as it is)

Anyone have a crystal ball I can look into?  Anyone want to marry me so I can stay here, UK residents only!

I really do.  I’ve been primarily doing school work for weeks, reading and writing.   It hasn’t been very interesting or noteworthy.   The school reading and classes have been for me, personally.  But it isn’t really something I can write about… it is more an internal process.

I got my topic for my dissertation approved and it is due on the 8th of August 2011.  Crazy.

So I am sitting in my living room watching Law and Order by the light of my Christmas tree.  My sleep schedule is a mess.  I rarely am asleep by 2 or 3 am.

We also went to go out to a Geek Chic night on Thursday.  We dressed as 10/Rose again, but NO ONE WAS DRESSED UP THERE.  We need to find a pub quiz or something locally b/c this is getting silly.

This weekend we did some errands and I got new wellies and gloves.  It’s snowed here for 2 days and everything is icy and cold and no sanding has happened on the roads or sidewalks here.  I’m scared to go out.

Steph got some bad news this weekend.  I’m not going to go into it here, but needless to say it is not good and I really wish I could do something to help and make it all right.  It’s just sad all around.

I have a paper due tomorrow at midnight and I am not confident in it right now.  *sigh*

Here are some pics!

(no previous Timelords were hurt in the making of this post)

Monday I went off to class in the afternoon and came back home afterwards.  It was a rather dull class on statistics and things I already knew….

Stephanie and I were sitting around when I read a tweet tat a certain hot former timelord was at BBC Scotland.  So we looked at each other, and booked it there as fast as we could.

Now I have a few rules about celebrity encounters.  I genereally feel awkward about seeing them in the world and do not want to interfere in their general life.  If they are out having dinner in the real world I may give them a smile, but I won’t interfere.  But if they are leaving a public place where they were doing a publicity thing and I happen to be there, well I may smile and say hi and perhaps even ask for an autograph.

So we stayed for a bit over an hour and it seemed like there was no one about.  However late last night a picture was posted that he was indeed there, but until rather late.  So we would have had to wait for 3+hours out in the cold.  But we tried and next time hopefully we will have better results.

Friday-whatever I did was not much of note, as I cannot remember what it was.  LOL.

Saturday: I know I did nothing except to go to Boots, and then forgot to go again today to get my prescription.  Will have to go to tomorrow.

Sunday:

Stephanie and I went on a Glasgow Bus Tour.  It was FREEZING cold up on the roof deck of the bus but it was worth it.  It was interesting to hear about all of the history of the buildings and whatnot and see all of the sights.
After we went to Buchanan St/St. Enoch and walked around and then had tea at the Chippy Doon the Lane.  It was really good.  We had fish and chips.

I am really tired now and have a ton of reading to do.

Single Father in 2 hours!

As soon as the pictures upload I will add the link!

Pictures!

Thursday 14/10/10

October 14th, 2010 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life in general | Scotland - (0 Comments)

Today was a busy day.  I didn’t sleep well and was awake early.  I ended up dozing off for a while and got up at about 9:30ish.  I got up and got ready and went off to St. Enoch to run some errands.

I got home and Stephanie got home from class soon after.  We made lunch and then went to campus.  I needed to go to the used bookstore to get a resource book for my class.   Then I went to the regular campus bookstore to pickup a notebook and folders for my class.  After we went and registered for the campus fitness facility so we can start working out.

I had lecture after that back to back, so I went off to class.   My first class was far more interesting than the second, which was just presentations.  Mine will be due to present in 2 weeks so I need to get cracking.

I got home and had dinner and then watched L&O UK.

All in all a good day.  :)

Update

October 12th, 2010 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life in general | Scotland - (0 Comments)

Friday was my 35th birthday.  It was a very nice day.  I got up and watched David Tennant on the telly and then got ready to go have coffee and get a manicure (which is already bloody chipped!) When we left, we saw a florist van had pulled up so I asked if it was for me, and it was.  :)  My sister and family had sent me flowers. :)

So we brought them in and then went for coffee and checked out the little charity shops by the uni.  We got lots of used books- Harry Potter, Doctor Who and the like and then went to a CD/DVD shop and got DVD’s so we have region 1 DVD’s on hand.

We had lunch at our local pub and then walked around a bit more and came back and had a rest and watched tv and just chilled.  It was a nice, quiet and relaxing day- which was all I wanted.   I was tired from the long week and whatnot so it was just what I wanted.  :)

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes and v-gifts and lovely tweets.

Since then, not much to say.  Just reading and relaxing.  We did finally get internet today so I should be able to update daily or at least every other day from now on.  :)

Latest update

October 4th, 2010 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life in general | Scotland - (0 Comments)

Sorry I haven’t posted an update- no internet at home until 12/10!!!!!

Week 2 in Scotland

27/9 Monday: class where I was called a show off in regards to baseball

28/9 Tuesday: no class, went to library, looked at flat, found out we got the flat, went shopping for sheets and towels and a duvet. Packed up room, got rid of a suitcase, and random crap.

29/9 Wednesday: Moving day!  Of course it started pouring as soon as we brought all of our crap downstairs.  Cabbed it to new place.  Organized a few things, jumped in shower, ran to  class.  When I got home I found Steph had done a ton of laundry and made me dinner.  xxxxxx :)

30/9 Thursday: Errands and headed to Freshers fest.  There was a really long queue which sucked but we did get free goody bags with random things in it.  It was really loud and hot inside and it was starting to get to me.  We left there and went to get pilows, but still did not find hangers.  We came back and I took a nap before class, but I was so worn out and anxiety ridden from the past few days, not to mention sore, I ended up just sleeping until after 7, but I felt SO much better after.  I have to remember I can’t treat my body like crap and I need to make sure I get enough rest.  I am still healing from surgery and I know I am doing more than I should especially when it comes to what I am carrying.

1/10 Friday: No class.  Went to Uni to drop off NHS paperwork and register w/ a GP.  I needed a script refilled that day and they were able to accommodate me by fitting me in at 3.  We had lunch at the local pub, Curler’s.  It was good.  She had duck and I had falafel.  Steph had to go back to the flat b/c the boiler people were coming to look at it from 1-5.  I hung out at the library and internetted and then went to my very quick appt.   I got my script and then we headed to St. Enoch to get a digi box and DVD player and also to look for hangers.

We got the digi box and DVD player. (we found when we got home that the DVD player was broken and we needed an antenna cable for the digi box so no tv that night :(  )

We walked around St. Enoch and got Body Shop shampoo, shower gel, and massage oil since they were on sale and we were able to get a 20% discount.

We ran into Virgin media guy and he said that the install date for internet is still the 12th.  :(

We made a snack stop at Starbucks for coffee and internet and then we stopped at the Townhouse dollar store and got random things like a candle, a mat for outside the door (it’s the Scottish flag!!) a bunny spoon rest for the stove, and Steph got a Tom Baker Doctor Who tshirt and bought me a jewelery tree for my birthday as an early birthday present.

We had a lovely roast chicken for dinner and relaxed.

2/10 Saturday:  Slept as late as possible (finally a good night’s sleep; something to do with using the rest of my old ativan script) and had breakfast.  Headed to library for internets and Steph went to exchange the DVD and get an antenna cable.   She met me at the library and we internetted and pondered reading until I realized it was getting late and I was getting hungry so we went back to the flat and had left overs.

I took a nap and Steph decorated her fangirl cave.  We put up my Doctor Who posters in the living room and watched tv and even were able to get online for a bit.  I did some tidying up and we watched QI XL.  We went to bed at about midnight but I couldn’t sleep and ended up cleaning the grout/lime buildup in the shower for about an hour.  LOL.

3/10 Sunday:  Slept ok, a little better than previous, and got up and had breakfast.  Our landlord needs to come by and measure the doorway to see if the couch she wants to get us will fit.  So we are just hanging out watching tv and doing some laundry and pondering the day.  Not sure what we are going to do, but eventually it will involve the internet I am sure.  :)

I have a workshop/conference class all week from 9-3 so it is going to be a long week for me.  Monday I have class from 9-3 and then 3-5.  Tuesday 9-3:30, Wednesday 9-3:30 and 4-6, Thursday 9-3:30 and 5-7 and then Friday (my birthday) from 9-3:30.  I still don’t have a proper mobile and would really like to get one ASAP.  I am not sure when I am supposed to do this given I am so busy all week and everything closes so damned early.  *grumble*   I could switch to a different provider since they are closer to school but I would have to see if the price would be the same.  I also should check and see if there is an Orange closer to school than the one in Buchanan square.

We ended up going out at lunch time after we heard from our landlord whether or not she was coming by to take measurements.  She wasn’t so we went out to Buchanan Galleries/St. Enoch to go to Primark and look for hangers.  We first stopped at Starbucks to check our email and then headed on.  We found the hangers and I got slippers and Steph picked up a few other things.  We checked on mobile prices at a mobile company called 3, and they have a better deal than Orange or Vodaphone.  Decisions, decisions.

We then headed back as we were planning to have tea at a local cafe.  We had high tea with little sandwiches and scones with cream.

We popped into Tesco to pick up a few things and then headed home, checking out our neighborhood- since we had found there was a Tesco right down the street.  We also found there was a Superdrug and a branch of our bank within 2 blocks.

I have lots of reading to do tonight and then must get to bed early since I have class at 9.
