What a day

February 21st, 2012 | Posted by admin in deep thoughts | exercise | fitness | food | Glasgow | health | Scotland | shopping | spinning | stress | UK | walk | workout - (3 Comments)

I am sure all of you had normal mornings. I am sure none of you had to jump out a WINDOW to get out of your living accommodation. I did. See, my key doesn’t work well and I have a hard time unlocking it from the inside. I tried and kicked at it and swore for a good 20 minutes before I gave up, climbed up on to the window sill, and jumped. I then went in the front of the building and unlocked the door easily from the outside. Seriously, this is my life.

When I got to the office, I found it open and some random guy at my computer. He didn’t know it was my desk- granted I haven’t really personalized it….

I then proceeded to leave my umbrella at the coffee shop (I later retrieved it). And then I managed to snap off the wrappy bit of the umbrella and now it is closed by a hair elastic.

My gym workout was less than stellar. I didn’t even want to BE there, but I did 10 on the spin bike (I need a spin cushion seat!) and 10 on the elliptical, and then a bit of weights, and then I walked home via Tesco- all in all the workout was 1.5 hours and burned 560 calories. I counted the walk home as part of it, it being partially uphill and me carrying a ton of crap in my backpack.

Now, today being pancake Tuesday I decided to make pancakes. I should have realized that given the fact I can’t cook at all (other than pasta and simple things) that even a pre-made pancake mix would be a disaster. Which it was. The first one had powder in it, and the second was burned and runny. Steph, come back! I then tried to make tea (with tea leaves) and managed to mess that up as well. So I am very glad I had a backup dinner plan (pasta, faux mince and roasted veggies) which is almost done. (Jen, help! I need a big canister of parmesan, the ones here are so tiny!!!)

The rest of the night’s plan is to watch last night’s House, and perhaps more Sherlock. (Of course I will watch more Sherlock, I can’t help myself! I am such a Cumberbitch!) I also want to get through some more of the Cyber bullying book I am reading that is due in a few days.

Tomorrow I need to run errands, get my ashes, and read more.

I also need to figure out what I am giving up for Lent. I was thinking about shopping but I mean, really. Then I thought about giving up swearing, and I was like yeah, that isn’t frigging happening. Last year I gave up diet Coke. I should give up eating brownies at the library. Hrm.

If so inclined, what are you giving up for Lent?

Flat: We have put the deposit down on the flat, and hopefully should be moving 1st February if not sooner, which is what I wish. My back is not a big fan of the crappy mattress at the hostel.

Illness: I guess I am back to about 95%. My throat hurts sometimes when I wake up but I think that has to do with the ridic heat/dryness at said hostel.

Working out: Well, suffice to say I haven’t done anything other than walking about since the 10K. Now that I don’t feel like utter crap, I plan to either start running again (weather permitting) or hitting the gym. While I am still not within walking distance of uni, I have a 5 day pass to a gym close to the hostel I will be using ASAP.

Uni: I met with my professor. I have to rework my proposal and whatnot and we are meeting again next week. Unfortunately I cannot locate my proposal AT ALL. I don’t even have a hard copy; I looked through all the paperwork I had here. Unless it is hidden away somewhere and I have no idea where that would be, I am kind of screwed. I can rewrite it, but I preferred not to reinvent the wheel and just wanted to edit the old one. So I have started over. I have 71 words written. Great start, right?

Still looking into getting a new computer. My old Dell laptop is slow and the cable doesn’t stay plugged in. I will get one with my office, but it won’t be “mine,” nor will it be a laptop. Also I don’t know when space will be allocated for me.

Fandom: Still a Cumberbitch. I can’t help it. I clearly need help, stat.

And I am off to get some errands done.

Wow 2 posts in one day? Who am I?

In my new {almost} running shoes I banged out nearly a 6k in under an hour. AND despite not thinking I would have a new PR, I DO! Thanks to my clever oldest niece who had showed me how to take screencaps on my iphone you can see it. Go me!

The sky was very, very blue today. It was such a great day out for a run!

Now, to the actual point of this post. This Christmas isn’t going to be great. In fact, in some ways it’s going to suck, and there isn’t anything I can do about it. I miss my mum, end of. So I decided to try to make myself feel better by coming up with the most crazy Christmas wishlist, a top ten you may say. Please do not think that I actually believe I will get any of these things. Especially #1. I wish!

10. All this retail work has made my nails a mess. I’d love a shellac manicure and a pedicure {I don’t even need toe polish I would just kill for the foot rub!} to start off the New Year right!

9. I could sure use this for my iphone.

8. Since I am being totally frivolous here, I can see myself in Buchanan Square with this bag.

7. While I am waiting for the coffee {see below} I should stretch.

6. I will need plenty of coffee to keep me going, so those Starbucks gift cards are always welcome. :)

5.Since I am going to be working hard on my thesis for my PhD, a new computer would be a huge asset! In my dreams, I know! I can be reasonable, even if it is still a stretch.

4. I guess new super cool running shoes would be great to get as well! The New Balance 993′s would be perfect. Grey/pink is fine. Size 7. :)

3. Now that I am running I really need a Road Id. I’d like the wrist id slim, in black. But I think I need to wait until I move until I get it.

2. While I’d love to have this at my door as well I will probably have to settle for this.

Or this, even.

1. What I would really love most of all would be to open the door on Christmas and have this waiting for me.

1. Workout- I had no desire to do anything yesterday but I needed to pick up my prescription at uni, so I had to go out.  I walked to uni and then got the bus to the gym.

I did about 25 mins of upper body and then C25K.  I was VERY sweaty at the end.  I wanted to spin some but both bikes were being used and the class was full so I walked to the bus and then headed home.  Not bad.  :)

I ordered a new Polar HRM that is more up to date and will help me better train.  I can’t wait to get my Polar FT7 HRM!

2. Grad school-I did meet with my professor on Thursday and he was totally fine that I hadn’t gotten very far.  We discussed some changes and I will be making for the paper and what else needs to be done.  I also ran into some of my classmates and they hadn’t done anything really either, so I don’t feel bad or behind anymore.  So I have 20,000 words to write for it.  Good times.  I have a TON of research done already.  Just need to read it all.

3. Stephanie finished a big paper yesterday so we went out for dinner.  I had grilled chicken and it came with a grilled veggie tart.  It was delish.  I also had some chips- b/c the chips at the Curler’s Rest are so delish.  And as a treat we had ice cream at the only Coldstone in Glasgow.  I had tiramisu.  Yum.   :)

4.  Today it’s raining.  It’s miserable out and I have no desire to go out in it.  I did walk a quick 2 miles to Boots and back to get my prescription and some coffee.  My ankle is really tender today so staying off it seems like a good idea.  Tomorrow I booked into a Body Pump class and that should be a good workout.

As for the rest of today- Doctor Who at 6:45 and some reading.  A nice, quiet, lazy day.

Update

April 12th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life in general | Red Sox | Scotland | shopping | walk | writing - (2 Comments)

I’ve merged my 2 blogs here to this location. It was getting silly trying to have 2 blogs and keep them separate, when it is my life and my life isn’t divided into 2 pages.

Yesterday we walked a lot and picked up a few things and saw a rainbow.

I also got a paper back with a VERY bad grade. Very bad to the point it could put my graduating in jeopardy. I am not sure what the passing grade level is for the overall class and I can’t seem to find that information on line. I may have to resubmit it, but even then, even if I got bumped up a letter I am not sure that would change the over all grade enough. I know it is my own fault. I totally blew through that paper and I was upset and worried about my mum. I also found that class a complete waste of time and that didn’t really help my attitude toward the paper. I need to contact the professor and ask what the next step should be. (it also doesn’t help that there isn’t exactly a shit ton of research on what I wrote on either) I also gave my very frank opinion on the class and how I found it kind of a waste of time. I am not going to be all nice, if I feel that it doesn’t serve its purpose.

Today I have my massage w/ R, and then I need to get a fair amount done on my Columbine paper. That is due in less than a week and I am about half way done.

Also Dice-K? WTF. :(

Catch up

The Red Sox won the home opener against the MFY! I do not think my neighbors appreciated my singing “Tessie” at the top of my lungs when it was over, however.

I am working on a 4k word paper. It’s on Columbine, so I have been voraciously reading books and articles on the subject. So much to absorb.

It is going to be 66 here in Glasgow tomorrow! I can’t wait! We are hitting the farmer’s market! There will be pics! Nails will be done hopefully and then a lovely walk before I get back to working on this paper.

Have a great weekend!

Edinburgh

March 19th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Edinburgh | Glasgow | grad school | life | life in general | Scotland | shopping | UK | walk - (0 Comments)

Yesterday, despite a late start, [info]kyrina and I went to Edinburgh.  Considering what has gone on lately and my professors told me to relax this week and I have wanted to see more of Scotland, we decided that we’d start off in Edinburgh.  (in a week or 2 we are going to St. Andrews)

We took the train in and I wanted to take a bus tour of the city.  I like the views and it was a nice day.  We decided to get off at the first stop for tea and to go to the weaving museum (where we got to see a LOT of tartans including MacDonald (and Fraser) LOL) and kilts and all things Scottish.

When we went back to get the bus we found that we were too late for the last bus :(  (maybe next time, even though Steph doesn’t like bus tours – I think they are fun and are a nice way to see the city and then decide where to go.)

We walked around, popped in lots of little shops and then went to the World’s End.  I was excited b/c I had read about this pub in the Outlander series, and I tried to imagine Jamie, Claire, Ian, and Rollo sitting by the fire, enjoying a drink.

We walked around some more and took a haunted tour given by Burke of Burke and Hare.  It was fascinating, if a bit cheesy, but delightful all the same.  I was exhausted after that so we headed back home.  (I couldn’t believe it cost 30p to have a pee at the train station!)  LMAO!

Pictures are here!  :)

Sunday walk

February 21st, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | life | Scotland | shopping | walk - (0 Comments)

Steph and I took an almost 5 mile walk today, down Byres Rd, through the Botanic Gardens, up Great Western Road, and back around campus.  We stopped at little shops, for lunch, and then the library, before the final stop at M&S Food for dinner noms (cod and Greek salad).

Pictures from today’s walk….you can even see flowers starting to poke up from the ground!

I’ve had this headache for what seems forever, only getting minor relief.  All week going to the workshop was torture.  I wasn’t sleeping b/c of the pain (that and my shoulder) which made getting up at 7 not so fun.  I am glad it is over.  I really didn’t get much out of it, until Thursday and I still have no idea what my assignment is going to be on.

I managed to struggle out to the shops w/ Steph yesterday.  First, we went to the farmers market down the hill and it was very cute and I had a lovely fresh scone.  We got some all natural soaps and oat bars as well.

Then we went to Buchanan b/c I needed to pick up my new glasses.  They were there, and I also picked up some makeup and more meds and other assorted things.

We poked around the area for a bit, popped into Forbidden Planet and then headed home.  On the way home I convinced her to stop and be all girly and get a manicure.  :)

I had a plan to finish my paper last night, but my head was being unreasonable in the evening so I spent half the time in the dark, and the other half we watched the first 2 episodes of Sherlock (again).

Today I have to finish my research proposal and read for Tuesday.  Neither of which are at the top of my list.  I hope I can get through at least finishing the paper without my head exploding.

Shopping day

February 4th, 2011 | Posted by cindy in Glasgow | grad school | Scotland | shopping - (0 Comments)

Instead of doing work like I should have today I ran errands instead.

First, we went to Xfeet to get fish pedicures. It was ok but needs to have a salon finish- like scrubbing and polish after.

Then we had a late lunch and wandered ending up at Primark for new pillows. After, we walked through the pouring rain and wind to Buchanan so I could see if my glasses were in and to pick up hair dye and toothpaste. 1 pair of my glasses in the twofor deal were ready.

Im so sleepy right now and I should be writing my last essay that is due next week. But I know I wont make sense so…….

I hope the rain stops soon. I was soaked through by the time we got home.
